EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR)

| Family Counseling and Trauma Healing Center | News

Have you heard someone refer to EMDR therapy and wondered if it’s something you should consider?  Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy was initially developed to help individuals who suffered from PTSD.  Over the past few decades its use has expanded.  Individuals who suffer from panic disorders, extreme anxiety, severe depression and traumatic life experiences can also benefit from EMDR therapy.

Some individuals see improvement after just one or two sessions.  However, most individuals report improvement after 6-12 therapy sessions.  EMDR therapy sessions can be done one to two times a week and can even be done over consecutive days.

The bilateral stimulation that is required to administer EMDR therapy can be accomplished through eye movement, audio stimulation, hand tapping and hand held pulsars.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS INVOLVED WITH EMDR?

Step 1 - The therapist will attempt to capture a full history of the patient.
Step 2 - The therapist will describe what a client can expect during the EMDR process.
Step 3 - With the assistance of a timeline and the client’s history, the therapist will assess what the target memory is.
Step 4 - Step 4 can be several steps - it is the actual therapy sessions in which EMDR is utilized to process the memory and reduce the disturbance that the particular memory evokes.
Final Step - Evaluate the treatment results
